MUN Students Lend a Hand in Montessori

The VIMSIA Model United Nations (MUN) class has included a service learning component into our program to take overall United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and work to implement these objectives in a local setting.  Sustainable Development Goal #4 is about education with the objective of working to  "Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all".

We have been working towards this by having the 9th and 10th grade MUN students help in the Montessori School classroom, connecting older students with the younger students.  The VIMSIA students have been working with their younger counterparts by helping them with reading and writing projects, including researching and presenting information about nations around the world.  Additionally, students have collaborated on art and writing projects.  Future plans include working with students on Ecology based activities that will connect to other Sustainable Development Goals.

Overall this connection has been very positive.  The older students benefit from the connection to the IB program's CAS focus, while acting as positive role models for younger students.  The Montessori students have developed strong bonds to their mentors and have benefitted from one on one learning opportunities with the MUN students.   —Mr. Black, MYP Social Studies and DP Global Politics
